THE REMOTE TREATMENT FACILITY: A SOLUTION FOR PROCESSING OF REMOTE-HANDLED WASTE

Argonne National Laboratory–West (ANL-West)rnpossesses an inventory of remote-handled (RH) waste thatrnconsists primarily of debris from reactor and hot cellrnoperations. This waste requires some combination ofrnsegregation, treatment and repackaging to enablernmandated disposition to a permanent disposal site. For arnmajority of the material stored at ANL-West, treatment isrnrequired to remove metallic sodium contamination, whichrnwould otherwise prevent shipment or disposal at any U.S.rnDepartment of Energy (DOE) disposal site. The RemoternTreatment Facility (RTF) is proposed as an annex tornANL-West’s Hot Fuel Examination Facility (HFEF). RTFrnwould house an air atmosphere hot cell with stations torninspect, sort, treat, assay, and repackage RH waste forrnshipment. While this facility would provide arncomprehensive processing solution for all onsite wasternstreams, it would also solve processing problems for RHrnsolid waste streams located at the Idaho NationalrnEngineering and Environmental Laboratory’s (INEEL)rnIntermediate Level Transuranic Storage Facility (ILTSF)rnand Transuranic Storage Area Retrieval Enclosure (TSARE).
