The Department of Energy (DOE), Office of Environmental Management (EM), is committed to promotingrnoccupational safety and health for those developing and using new environmental remediation technologies during all phasesrnof development and deployment. The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) has successfully implementedrnIntegrated Safety Management (ISM) functions and principles that facilitate completion of site missions while ensuring thernprotection of workers, the public, and the environment. In 2000, OST initiated a concerted effort to develop safety initiativesrnto effect a culture change. These initiatives, consistent with ISM, can be generally categorized as 1) Making our technologiesrninherently safer to use (designing for safety), and 2) Providing useful safety and health information about our technologies tornthe sites and technology operators. How these mandates are integrated at the site and the use of the Technology Safety DatarnSheet (TSDS) is explored in this paper.
