Technology Solutions for Environmental Management: A Web-Based Information System Supporting Cleanup and Closure of the Weapons Complex Through Technology Transfer

In January 2002, the Energy & Environmental Research Center (EERC) commencedrndevelopment on a Web-based information system to support cleanup and closure of the weapons complexrnthrough technology transfer. The Technology Solutions for Environmental Management (TSEM)rninformation system is the successor to the Deactivation and Decommissioning Information System (DDIS).rnDDIS was developed by the D&D Focus Area for use in responding to site-identified technology needs.rnDDIS currently contains 213 site-generated D&D technology need statements and nearly 500 innovativerntechnologies applicable to D&D activities. Each need and technology is categorized according to 1)rnproblem area, 2) media, and 3) contaminant or remediation objective. This hierarchical coding structurernprovides the mechanism for mapping site needs to potential technology solutions and similar needs acrossrnthe weapons complex. TSEM will expand on the DDIS concept by broadening the scope to include allrncleanup activities (no longer limited to deactivation and decommissioning). Added features of TSEM willrninclude real-time data entry of site projects; fast and flexible communication between sites, headquarters,rntechnology vendors, and the research community; easy adaptation to meet programmatic or site-requestedrnchanges; project status tracking and evaluation; assorted reporting features; and capability to bernintegrated with Headquarters and site-maintained information systems. With the recent reorganization ofrnthe Environmental Management (EM) Program, TSEM development has been limited to conceptualrndrawings and flowcharts. System programming is anticipated to begin in early summer 2002.
