A demonstration was conducted at the HAZMAT Spill Center at the Nevada Test Site to test an in-siturnchemiresistor sensor that was subjected to temperature variations, significant moisture, and large trichloroethylene (TCE)rnconcentrations in sand. The sensor was shown to provide a real-time, continuous response when exposed to TCE emplacedrnin the sand, and it also responded rapidly to a decrease in the TCE vapor concentration when clean air was vented throughrnthe system. Temperature variations impacted baseline chemiresistor resistances, but at high TCE concentrations, therntemperature-induced resistance variations were overwhelmed by the increase in resistance due to TCE exposure.
