Mesa-type solar cells are widely used in thin-film solar cell R&D since they can be metallised in a fast and simple way and lead, in principle, to the required characterization parameters that could easily be obtained for equivalent solar cells with a well-optimised metallisation scheme. However, due to the crudeness of the metallisation scheme, Mesa cells typically have I-V curves with poor fill factor FF and, often, a short-circuit current density J_(sc) that is significantly smaller than the light-generated current density J_L. This paper presents an approach of how to obtain a good estimate of the 1-Sun I-V curve that would result from a well-optimised solar cell metallisation scheme. The only requirement for the method outlined in this paper is an inexpensive, standard Suns-V_(∝) tester with a slight modification allowing the measurement of J_(sc)-Suns curves in addition to the standard Suns-V_(∝) measurements. Relevant characterization parameters such as V_1, V_2, V_x, and pseudo fill factor are introduced and their usefulness is demonstrated.
