If emissions of greenhouse gases, and in particular CO_2, continue unabated the enhanced greenhouse effect may alter the world's climate system irreversibly. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) an increase of more than two degrees Celsius in the global average surface temperature has the potential to cause significant damage to the eco-systems on which we are directly dependent.
