The aim of this study was to enhance the biological functionality of the scaffold to control human mesenchymal stem cell (hMSC) differentiation using surface chemistry alone, without the addition of growth factors. We used a biodegradable, injectable particulate scaffold with components that have been shown to support cell viability and colonization of a defect space[l]. This study describes the selective surface modification of spherical PLGA particles with plasma polymers; and their effect on the phenotype of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) cultured within 3D scaffolds.
