BIOENERGY POLICIES FOR SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT IN AFRICA – RESULTS FROM THE PROJECT COMPETE

The Competence Platform on Energy Crop and Agroforestry Systems - Africa (COMPETE), supportedby the European Commission in the 6th Framework Programme, successfully established a platform for policydialogue and capacity building in Africa involving key stakeholders throughout the bioenergy provision and supplychains. Specifically, the COMPETE platform organised several high-level seminars, workshops, and conferencesaddressing important issues for the sustainable exploitation of bioenergy resources in Africa in the fields of policydevelopment and sustainability assessment. Based on the results of COMPETE platform activities, policyrecommendations were elaborated and discussed with stakeholders in several African countries. With the launch ofthe COMPETE Bioenergy Competence Platform for Africa in November 2009, the strong engagement will becontinued for the promotion and development of practical, targeted and efficient policy mechanisms to ensure theimplementation of socially, environmentally and economically sustainable bioenergy systems that enhance localvalue-added and contribute to sustainable development in African countries.
