Modeling Objectives on Cost: Insight for Practitioners and Academicians

Following a previous paper entitledrnModeling Objectives on Cost in a Decision Maker’srnValue Structure, the authors present the results ofrnsurvey research conducted to determine whether or notrnthe objective of minimizing cost should be included asrnpart of the fundamental objectives hierarchy whenrnmodeling a decision maker’s value structure.rnConclusions are drawn for both practitioners andrnacademicians. For practitioners, the discussionrnaddresses which technique those who know and userndecision analysis prefer and why. Suggestions forrnusing the two competing techniques both separately andrntogether are offered. For academicians, as a by-productrnof the surveys, survey results illuminate how much andrnwhat kind of decision analysis training and education isrnreceived by systems engineers, operations researchers,rnengineering managers, decision analysts, and others.rnStandard contingency table hypothesis testing is used tornvalidate certain points.
