Web-based Process Documentation –Getting Over the 'Paper Mentality' Hurdle

We are in an era of extensive emphasisrnon process, process maturity, and process improvement.rnUp until only a few years also, most processrndocumentation was paper based. Large volumes ofrndetailed process descriptions occupied our bookshelvesrn– and normally remained unused for long periods ofrntime. Many companies are now using their intranets tornhost, manage, and distribute process documentation.rnWeb-based approaches can make processrndocumentation both more accessible and more easilyrnmaintained. However, too often these processrndescriptions still exhibit a “paper mentality” in that theyrnleave much of the real power of the internet largelyrnuntapped.rnThis paper discusses a number of processrndocumentation concepts that are beyond this paperrnmentality hurdle. The basic premise is that morernadvanced web-based approaches allow integration ofrnand easy navigation among sets of highly usefulrnsystems engineering process-related information –rnwhich in turn facilitates more effective and efficientrnsystems engineering.
