The ‘Learn from Experience’ (LfE) journey in Systems Engineering

This paper describes how ‘Learning from Experience’rn(LfE) encompasses and pervades the popular domain ofrninterest ‘Knowledge Management’ (KM) throughoutrnthe life cycle of a project. This paper is NOT aboutrnKM. It is about the development, retention and re-usernof tacit knowledge or wisdom. If KM captures thernexplicit Knowledge that can be captured and extractedrnfrom databases, then LfE adds to this the tacitrnknowledge [or wisdom] of those who have ‘been therernand done it’. By combining explicit and tacitrnknowledge we have the better of two worlds coexistingrntogether in a self-learning and self-sustainingrnprocess.rnAs Systems Engineering can be expressed as arnSocio-Technical activity it is appropriate that SystemsrnEngineers utilise LfE to inform the Enterprise, projectrnand the personal knowledge base as early as possible inrnthe project life to ensure the chosen system solutionsrnare those with the best opportunity for success.rnLfE is generic and is just as appropriate for a nonengineeringrnenterprises, for example a BankingrnInstitution.
