In the year 1999 the mainrntransportation issue in the Netherlands was thernQuestion: “If, why and how to facilitate the need for arnnew national airport?”. Amsterdam Airport Schiphol isrngrowing towards its maximum capacity, due to spacernand environmental restrictions. The Dutch governmentrnlooked for alternatives to facilitate the demand forrnfurther growth in air transportation, besides expandingrnthe current airport. An alternative would be an airportrnon an artificial island a few kilometers out of the coastrnof the Netherlands. As part of a course addressing thernsubjects System Engineering and Integrated LogisticrnSupport it became the problem field used as a casernstudy. A problem solving method was developed basedrnon some basic inter-related concepts such as thernnecessary requirements for capacity, availability andrnmaintainability that should be addressed during thernsystem engineering phases related to the design andrndevelopment of complex systems. Students stepwiserndesigned a conceptual plan for an airport in sea on anrnartificial island based on the problem solving method.rnIn respect to the duration of the course the results werernmore than satisfying.
