Applying systems engineering techniques tornthe Concept Exploration (CE) phases of projects isrnoften met with either indignation or incredulity. Thisrnmuch less structured, problem-ridden phase seems tornmany to defy the use of process. This phase hasrntraditionally been problematic and difficult to execute.rnIF the word "process" is too strong, the idea ofrn"systems thinking" that helps make some order out ofrnchaos can be effectively used for coaching teams tornbetter performance.rnThis paper discusses some typical problemsrnencountered in one organization and some successfulrnuse of systems engineering approaches to improve thernteams' performances in the Concept Exploration phase.
