Functional Analysis for Existing Products: a Detailed Procedure

Functional Analysis (FA) for regenerativernsystems is often executed as reverse engineering orrndesign recovery. The initial product developerrncompleted the Functional Analysis, and minimalrnupdates were required or took place as the productrnevolved. The working definition of a function has oftenrnbecome ambiguous. When the goal is to reify what thernproduct / system does, Functional Analysis is onernmethod to be used in conjunction with the identificationrnof the scenarios to support a system decomposition torndiscover underlying functions. The scenarios identifyrnhow the system / product is used by external systems (arnhuman or other man-made system) and FA helps tornexpose the system behaviors that are required to supportrnthat use, and the functions that are required to supportrnthat behavior. The value of functional analysis is thernyield of the main and derived functions of the system /rnproduct, which are the solution independent functions.rnThe separation of the domain functions from thernsubsequently developed implementation functionsrn(those required to provide a design dependentrncapability) facilitates the insertion of technology andrnmanagement of change.rnThe transition of the modular product structure Adifonrn[ADI2001] from the Phase 1 team to the on-goingrnimplementation required the clarification andrndocumentation of a procedure for Functional Analysis.rnThe generic part of that procedure is described herernwith templates and detailed ‘user’ instructions.
