The Integrated Unit Simulation System (IUSS) provides a simulation-based analysis toolkit to evaluate equipment, operational policy, and training. The IUSS has been largely applied to simulation-based acquisition (SBA) efforts focused on developing an understanding of the physical capabilities and limitations of the individual combatant (IC) and on developing corresponding technologies to overcome those constraints. However, the IUSS is currently being enhanced to further support the SBA process by developing a corresponding understanding of the cognitive capabilities and limitations of the IC and small units, for use in developing and evaluating technologies as well as Tactics, Techniques and Procedures (TTPs) to improve force survivability and lethality. In this paper, we describe how IUSS is being extended via the incorporation of a generic human behavior model, SAMPLE, which provides a domain-independent representation of key human decision-making functions of information processing, situation assessment, and rule-based decision-making and task execution. We describe our approach to developing specific cognitive components that generate reactive, real-time behaviors for a squad-level ambush engagement.
