This paper is focused on problems of power quality estimation in ships' electric power networks. The characteristic of electricity in the networks has been laid. Some differences between the ship systems and land networks have been pointed out. Two aspects of the power quality problem have been addressed. Firstly, the appropriate choice of power quality parameters for the presented aim has been discussed. Secondly, the methods of their estimation, especially methods concerning frequency measurement, harmonics analysis, THD defining as well as problem of aggregating of measurement intervals have been discussed. These considerations will be based on the foundation of the original authors' research carried out in ship electrical power systems and relevant examples from this work will be given. The consequences of the differences for measurement methods and equipment have been described as well. Afterwards, the forthcoming trends in the ships' electric power engineering and metrology have been shown. The present rules concerning power quality in ship's networks have been discussed. Further, some proposals for improving these rules have been laid. Presented paper is a trial of summary of research conducted under the author supervision and the earlier works carried out by the author together with T.Tarasiuk and presented at IMEKO TC4 in Gdynia (Poland, 2005), IMTC in Sorrento (Italy, 2006) and IMEKO XVIII World Congress in Rio de Janeiro (Brasil, 2006).
