Results of research about the prediction of random quantities have enormous potential for application in engineering and are, indeed, of fundamental importance, which is revealed when one addresses the question: if in a system with m components, k quantities failed in the time interval [0, t_1], how many components will fail in a given future time belonging to the interval [t_1,t_2]? or, even more, what are the prediction limits (lower and upper) for the number of components that will fail in the time interval [t_1, t_2]? There are many systems in which the prediction of times of failure of parts is critical.
