A new class of systems are emerging which require a communications network which supports fault tolerance. For example, this requirement is one of the key enabling technologies for automotive 'by-wire' systems. Time Triggered Protocol (TTP/C) is a Class C serial communications system which has been developed to address such applications. This paper will outline the background of TTP/C, an introduction to the requirements of safety critical systems along with an overview of the TTP/C system solution including details such as bus access and frame formats. There is also a comparison between TTP/C and todays popular serial communications protocols in order to highlight the differences.
