摘要

Several processes to thermally treat wood have been commercialised in Europe in the past decade. Due to the high temperatures with most processes using 180 - 220 ℃, the chemical structure of the wood components are greatly changed. Heat treated lumber has altered biological and physical properties. The wood is more resistant against basidiomycetes and soft rot fungi, and has a lower equilibrium moisture content and fibre saturation point. Consequently, the dimensional stability is improved. Because of the increased brittleness of the wood, some strength properties are greatly decreased. Due to the enhanced durability, dimensional stability, and good appearance, thermally-treated wood is currently used in Europe in many indoor and outdoor applications.
