Lightweight embankment fills allow geotechnical engineers facing unfavourable subsoil conditions, particularly highly compressible soils such as peat, mud, soft clays, to reduce the driving forces contributing to instability, and to reduce potential settlements resulting from consolidation of compressible foundation soils. Lightweight fills may be appropriate in conditions where the construction schedule does not allow the use of staged construction, where existing utilities or adjacent structures are present that cannot tolerate the magnitude of settlement induced by placement of typical fill, and at locations where post-construction settlements may be excessive under conventional fills. This paper presents recent applications of reinforced slopes and mechanically stabilised earth walls made with steel and geogrid reinforcements combined with lightweight expanded clay aggregates (LWCA) through case histories. Each case is presented giving information about the geotechnical problems to be solved, the adopted solution and the specific installation procedures required by the LWCA fill.
