Based on the analysis of strata, depositional system , structural nature and variety of data including the geophysical, well drilling and outcrop in the Tarim basin, the geographic location, plate-movement nature, basin type and the sedimentary pattern of Tarim basin in various stages of the Paleozoic time are induced in terms of the activation theory. The Tarim plate collided with adjacent plates during the Paleozoic evolution stages and resulted in "S" shaped drifting path. Under the effect of plate movement nature, the Tarim basin underwent various evolutional stage in the Paleozoic: From the Cambrian to early Ordovician, it was a craton basin located in a divergence margin; From the end of early Ordovician to the end of early Paleozoic, eastern oceanic crust (southern now) of the Tarim plate subducted and a back-arc foreland basin was formed in the eastern convergence margin, meanwhile a passive margin basin was developed in the north; From Silurian to Devonian, Tianshan ocean closed and the Tarim plate initially collided with the Kazakhstan plate, then in-tracraton basin was formed; A passive margin basin formed in the southwestern divergence margin in Carboniferous. The Tarim basin was a foreland basin in Permian.
