The Context of Manufacturing Applications: Manufacturing, ERP, and the Supply Chain

Over the past few years many changes have occurred both within and external to manufacturing environments that have substantially affected the domain of manufacturing applications. These changes, which included enterprise-level initiatives such as ERP, Supply Chain Management, CRM campaigns, new technologies such as the Internet and XML, as well as the adoption of new manufacturing/operating disciplines such as lean, flow, and agile manufacturing have created a new set of demands and requirements for manufacturing applications. Successfully navigating this new and changing landscape requires an understanding of the overall context of manufacturing applications. A variety of industry models such as REPAC, SCOR, etc. offer a mechanism to assist with this understanding.
