Discrete interval groundwater sampling is fast-becoming the answer to both accuracy and cost reduction. Barcelona, et. al, (1994) concluded that micro-purging could effectively facilitate the acquisition of representative groundwater samples at discrete depths. RCRA specifically requires, where and when possible,t hat vertical profiling of groundwater monitoring wells be conducted in remedial investigations. This requirement has in the past been essentially suspended due to the lack of adequate sampling equipment. Three new groundwater samplers approach this sampling method from distinctly different directions; micro-purge, pressurized-trap interval, and in-situ discrete pint-interval. These discrete-interval groundwater samplers, their advantages, drawbacks, and method of operation are compared and contrasted in this paper for appropriate selection by the reader. A comparative evaluation table is presented for ease of selection based on the requirements of an individual sampling plan.
