Due to a national deficiency of information, acceptance and legal admission of field analysis methods a study on the applicability of on-site analysis was initiated, which is still continued and evaluated. The study comprised an extensive literature review and market analysis and a series of field tests with selected instrumnets and methods, including both well approved and emerging technologies. Results of the study are processed into comprehensive documents providing the necessary know-how to the offices and engineers employed with site investigation and waste management. Details of the first part of the tests performed at a contaminated soil site were already reported at the 4th Symposium. A 2nd campaign was performed perforemd at a special waste treatment plant. In this paper, emphasis is put on the 3rd field test, that was carried out in November 1996 at an industrial area with manifold contaminations caused by former industrial activities. A collection of promising systems and methods are applied to a variety of hazards. The analytical program is fitted to the peculiar German conditions and requirements. Data of genral interest will be reported.
