Sanitary landfills have been used as the most common form of waste disposal in the past and present. This is the traditional metod of waste disposal and remediation of all types of contamination. Soil-air (matrix-gas) surveying is an investigative technique that is commonly used to assist remedial investigation of landfill areas. On every landfill site, decomposition gases are produced. The principal components of landfill-gas are: oxygen (O_2), argon (Ar), hydrogen (H_2), nitrogen (N_2), carbon dixide (CO_2), water (H_2O) and methane (CH_4). Additionally, organic-and inorganic gases such as hydrogen sulfiede (H-2S), aliphatic, aromatic and chlorinated gases are present - some times in high concentrations. Gas production in sanitary landfills and the problems associated with this production were and still are mater of interest. Landfill-gas is normally saturated with water-vapor and has a temperature between 30 deg C t 60 deg C (1, 2). This later characteristic make it difficult, even impossile, to measure or control landfill-gas in situ by "clorimetric or related techniques.
