We have created a handheld instrument (the RCL MONITOR) based on a sensor that is entirely selective for chlorinated hydrocarbons. It has been tested in actual use on DOE sites in applications involving routine inspection of monitoring wells; well drilling and perforation; control of active soil extraction processes; and monitoring of passive soil vapor extraction. The most successful applications were those that took advantage of its portability, namely usrvey and health and safety related applications. The RCL MONITOR replaced quarterly laboratory analysis of headspace vapor samples from certain wells at Idaho National Engineering Laboratory. At the Hanford Site, it was also used to monitor drill cuttings to determine whether they were to be classified as Hazardous Waste for disposal. In most cases, the cuttings were clean and substantial monetary savings were realized.
