We have developed a novel fiber-optic infrared spectroscopic probe to allow the rapid and easy identification of organic components in hazardous waste solutions collected at disposal collection sites. The collected wastes which typically are stored in 55 gal. Drums, must be analyzed for chemical composition before disposal procedures can b einitiated. Present practices which involve removing a sample from the container and sending it to an analytical laboratory for analysis are time consuming and expensive. The developed systems circumvents the tedious sampling procedures, by using a barrel probe to directly identify/classify liquid waste.
