A novel probe for the detection and identification of radionuclides has been developed by the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station under the sponsorship and combined effort of the Department of Energy for on-Site characterization of the soil subsurface using the Site Characterization and Analysis penetrometer System (SCAPS). The SCAPS is a rapid, in-field too lsystem of specialized subsurface sensors and samplers that provide a cost-effective means to characterize soil conditions. Soil penetration and analsysi to depths of 50 m are possible in nominally compacted soils. The device uses a NaI scintillation crystal to detect gamma radiation in soil at the probe tip. The emitted gamma rays from radioactive waste that may be present are collected and analyzed to diagnose their identity and relative concentration. The design has been optimized and sensitivity limits are currently being investigated.
