Issues affecting the detection limits of the SCAPs fiber optic Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS) cone penetrometer probe are discussed. Key variables examined are the matrix effects of grain size and water content. The topic of probe design and issues concerning sample presentation are also addressed. It was observed that a design in which measurements are made through a sapphrie window in the probe can produce detection limits which are at or below the EPA's Site Screenign Levels (SSLs) for Pb, Cd and Cr in Sand.
