Analysis of tidal eddies in northern spencer gulf

An unusual feature of the tides in the area surrounding Port Bonython in Northern Spencer Gulf, South Australia (see Figure 1) is the presence of tidal eddies to the north and south to Lowly Point. The importance of these is seen by the fact that the southern eddy encircles the ocean end of the jetty that extends southward into the gulf from Port Bonython. This eddy was responsible for the initial loop in the trajectory of the "ERA" oil spill of August 1992 and is likely to similarly effect any future oil spill that occurs during tanker loading or berthing.
