The past two decades have seen significant advancements in computer technology. As a result, mathematical modelling has taken on a special role in industrial applications, particularly in the area of rela-time implementations. With careful planning and execution, mathematical models can be used very effectively to solve industrial problems, and when implemented on-line, to improve the efficiency and control of manufacturing processes. Successful applications abound. However, these sucesses are also accompanied by numerous unsuccessful experineces. Of the more pity is that a majority of those failures are associated with problems encountered during appliccation and implementation, rather than due to technical difficulties during model development. Sucessful applications of mathematical models require diligent planning for the full scope of the probject.
