Several important defence and civilian sensors make use of light propagating in water either for passive viewing of underwater scenes or for active underwater sensing with lasers. The performance of these systems is often severely degraded in murky water: as turbidity is common, particularly in northern Australian coastal waters, its effects need to be modelled and compensated for.
