The state of the liquid flow field is important in determining the extent of particle dispersion. For example, some electric are furnaces used in steelmaking inject pelletised direct-reduced iron feed into a quiescent steel system. This can result in the formation of `ferrobersgs' at the upper surface of the liquid [15]. Previously the authors [14] computationally investigated particle dispersion in a stagnant liquid with no heat transfer and identified limitations to particle mixing in such systems. Dispersion of particles is expected to be enhanced by motion of the liquid.
