The nature of tides in the shallow waters of bays and estuaries is of great practical imporance to fishermen, environmentalists, mariners and coastal engineers. A knowledge of the currents is particularly important in the Boston Bay region of southern Spencer Gulf, South Australia, the site of a multi-million dollar Southern Bluefin Tuna farming industry. This is because of the effect of tidal currents on the mass transport of dissolved nutrients and pollutants, suspended sediments and fine organic material.
