This paper is concerned with steady two-dimensional free-surface fluid flow involving a jet, such as shown in Figure 1(a). We assume that the fluid is incompressible and inviscid, and the flow is irrotational. Far upstream the flow is uniform with constant welocity U and depth H. Hence, we can define a non-dimensional quantity as the upstream Froude number, where gdenotes the acceleration due to gravity. A jet bounded by two free surfaces is thrown upward when this stream meets a blocking wall, as the effect of inertial forces is initially more important than the gravity force.
