Computational fluid dynamics (CFD) is new recognized as a scientific discipline in its own right and embraces the numerical simulation of the broad class of flow and transport processes arising in nature, and engneering. Applications range from slow viscous flows in manufacturing processes, to ground-water and shallow-water flow and transoprt in environmental studies, to high speed gas fols in aerodynamics. The problems are often characterized by strong nonlinearitis that lead to complex flow structures and trasport patterns with tin shlocs, boundary layers and similar local features that must be adqueately resolved. Numerically, this area is further distinguished by the need to provide fine graded meshes to treat strong convective effects in many applications.
