Tapping Hermes: a case study of tapping processes

Developing distributed systems includes activities such asntesting, verification, debugging, and performance analysis. The authorsnintroduce the set of generic events that are monitored by differentndevelopment activities for distributed systems and identify otherndesirable monitoring properties for an efficient monitoring pool. Theynthen give an overview of the newly introduced constructs, called tappingnprocesses, that extend orthogonal languages so that this language-basednapproach can also be used as an event-based approach for the developmentnof distributed systems. Those constructs provide accurate informationnabout monitored systems without causing any perturbation. To illustratenthe advantages of the new approach, it is shown in detail how the Hermesnprogramming language was extended to include the tapping processes'nconstructs
