Single pulse shock tube studies of the thermal decomposition of 5-methylhexyl iodide at temperatures of 900-1040 K and pressures at 1.8-2.4 bar have been carried out using the comparative rate technique. The 5-methyl hexyl-1(5MeH-1) radical generated by splitting of the C-I bond undergoes decomposition by beta C-C bond fission and isomerization reactions which give 5-methylhexyl-4 (5MeH-4), 5-methylhexyl-5 (5MeH-5), 5-methylhexyl-6 (5MeH-6) and 5-methylhexyl-2 (5MeH-2) radicals via reversible 1-4, 1-5, 1-6 and 6-2 H transfer reactions. Subsequent decomposition of the radicals via beta C-C bond fission accounts for the observed product spectrum containing ethylene, propene, isobutene, 1-hexene, cis-2-hexene and trans-2-hexene.
