Viewing Contemporary Art Works: Alternative Education of Visual Literacy

This paper describes the significance of viewing contemporary art works for the education of visual literacy in higher education. In every day life, we see many images such as pictures, movies, via TV, internet, mobile phones etc. In the electronically networked society, In such society that everyone could be a sender of information, visual literacy, literacy through vision, is very important. First, an overview about what is visual literacy is surveyed. Then an art work of Canadian artist, Jeff WALL, is mentioned as a sample for studying visual literacy, which can be interpreted from various points of view. Also a result of two questionnaires for the same students is analyzed and the significance is concluded.
