The region of Northeast Asia has abundant coal resources and also produces and makes use of coal in massive quantities. For the future as well, it is expected to increase steadily energy demand including coal. Within the Region, the eastern coastal area of China, Japan, and South Korea together constitute a huge center of coal consumption on the order of 800 million tons per year. Nowadays coal utilization cannot be discussed without considering the related environmental concerns. Presentation is focused on the role of coal to meet energy demand considering environmental issues.
