Safety Certification - The BCSP Way

In 1969, the Board of Certified Safety Professionals (BCSP) was established to advance the professionals and the profession of safety. Since 1969, over 26, 000 have applied for certification; of these 26, 000, 17000 individuals have been certified from the USA and 80 from other countries, including 3 from China. Currently, one certification is offered, the Certified Safety Professional. In 1989, BCSP and the American Board of Industrial Hygiene, for the purpose of certifying technician level safety personnel, established the "Joint Committee". The "Joint Committee" was formally named the Council on Certification of Health, Environmental and Safety Technologists (CCHEST). CCHEST offers 5 certifications in three categories: Occupational Safety and Health Technician (OHST), Construction Safety and Health Technician (CHST) and Safety Training Supervisor (STS) in Construction, General Industry and Petrochemical. Typical methods for the construction of a content-valid examination will be discussed, including: 1. Role delineation 2. Development of a test blueprint 3. Item development & validation 4. Test assembly 5. Review and revision 6. Content-valid examination 7. Passing point determination 8. Test administration 9. Psychometric analysis This presentation will provide the following information for BCSP and CCHEST: 1. Qualification requirements 2. Exam blueprints 3. Cut (passing) score determination 4. Exam delivery systems 5. Continuance of certification 6. Accreditation of the certification The presentation will conclude with my personal comments about what the CSP means to me.
