Globally, the future of Occupational Safety and Health will be manifest in many ways, the different manifestations arising from the various cultures, levels of economic development and the particular risks involved, all contributing to different outcomes. However, it is believed that common drivers exist which will lead to the improvements in Safety and Health in all Societies including the People's Republic of China. These drivers which include regulation, economics and corporate values are exerting pressure to improve health and safety. Societies interests, corporate interests, and the manufacturing interests are all served by enhancements to the safety and health of workers and improvements to workplaces. With China's enormous strides in the development of industrial infrastructures, considerations beyond basic survival become increasingly important and governmental involvement, cost benefit analysis and market forces will create continuing pressure for improvements. The actual nature of the developments in China and the balance between these three domains will remain to be seen but will inevitably lead to the understanding that risks can, and should be, controlled.
