Fatigue lifetime estimation of Chunho steel box bridge on Han River

In this paper, the estimation of fatigue lifetime of steel box girder of ChunhornBridge on Han River in Korea is examined. From a series of the nondestructive test results, wernhad detected lots of Imperfect Penetration (IP) defects in the welding lines of the steel boxrngirder under tension. By analyzing the NDT results, three welding joints that had the poorestrnwelding quality were selected. Steel cores were taken out of and we investigated the size and thernshape of the IP defects. The ambient stresses of the sections due to traffic loads were monitoredrnfor several days. Based on the results of the stress measurement, fatigue lifetime of weldingrnjoints was estimated as remained as only 5 years. This was coinciding with the result of the observationrnresults on the steel cores at which we found the cracks at the tips of the IP defect. Asrnthe remedy for the target bridge, the urgent repairs for retrofitting the welding joints were recommendedrnto substitute those joints with additional steel plates.
