Revealed Processes in Knowledge Management

Agile processes are a rational approach to applying processes in dynamic environments. As such, we should expect that traditional AI tools developed to operate in dynamic environments would offer guidance for newly developing process-oriented systems. In business, as in life, however, there are other agents, some with complementary goals, and some with competitive goals. Before we can study agile processes, we must develop the means to track user activity and analyze it for process-based use. By developing common process representation protocols for dynamic process and sharing tools for collecting such representations, we can create a shared base for research that will support not only the study of agile processes in situ, but also enable the development of next-generation process-oriented knowledge management systems. The TaskTracer suite offers a set of tools that, when coupled with other data sources, can gather the data needed for agile process inference — a first step in understanding process-oriented knowledge management "in the wild" of users' environments.
