Abstract: Research has been directed toward the goal of identifying objects in a stratified ocean-elastic sediment environment. An elastic object, (called inclusion) is located in the ocean. The mathematical procedure is based on the physical idea of scattering one or more 'plane waves' off the unidentified inclusion and then trying to identify the shape of the inclusion from its far- field pattern. Based on a reciprocal identity for the acoustic-elastic waves in the stratified medium, a relation between the acoustic waves in the far-field and the shapes of the inclusion has been developed. This relation is used to obtain an approximate algorithm to reconstruct the shape of the inclusion.!
