Multi-component white cast irons(Fe-5%Cr-5%V-5%Mo-5%W-X%CX=0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0))were prepared in order to investigate the relationship among carbon content, type and morphology of carbides, and amount of auslenite in the matrix(V_Υ) in as-cast and heat-treated conditions. In the as-cast specimens, different types of carbides were observed with increasing the carbon content. V_Υ was also a function of the carbon content in the as-cast and heat-treated conditions, and showed a different behaviour depending upon the type of heat treatments(air hardening and tempering). On the other hand regardless of the carbon content, fine secondary caibides were precipitated in all the heat-treated specimens.
