It is often difficult to obtain a series of composite insulator samples with different hydropho-bicity status and keep them over a long period of time. In this paper, we find a way to make it easy. It was found that silicone rubber composite insulator samples thoroughly lost their hydrophobicity after being immersed in tap water for several days in our laboratory. The reason of hydrophobicity loss is that a layer of hydrophilic substance formed on the surfaces of samples during being immersed. It was also found that the originally hydrophilic samples gradually recovered the hydrophobicity with the removal of the hydrophilic substance by filter paper. Whereas the surface hydrophobicity status didn't change for some time ( > 30 days) when the samples were kept in air in our laboratory. According to the experimental results, a convenient way to prepare samples used for hydrophobicity study is brought forward.
