Sicilica-coated luminescent semiconductor nanocrystals (e.g., cadmium sulfide) used as excellent photocatalysts and optoelectronic devices have received great attention recently The shell of silica can enhance photochemical stability of the nanocrystals and increase quantum yields of nanocrystals. The core-shell nanocomposites can be extended to use as biocompatible labels because of biocompatibility of the silica shell Hollow silica sphere can be used as good support of catalyst because of its high surface area. In this report, monodispersed cadmium sulfide-silica core-shell composites and hollow silica spheres have been synthesized by reverse microemulsion technology. The size of CdS/SiO_2 composites and the thickness of hollow silica sphere can be easily controlled by altering the addition amount of reactants. The products were characterized by TEM, XRD, N_2 adsorption/desorption, XRF, etc.
