VERANDAH IN FRIEDRICH SILABAN’S RESIDENTIAL PROJECTS

Silaban’s verandah design characteristics are the roof, wideoverhangs, materials, connection with interior-exterior, andsitting elements. Some differences in two houses (the numberand size of verandah and roof materials) show the changementof verandah in his design. As conclusion, the variation imply hisdesign process to realize his notion of verandah that rooted fromIndonesian vernacular house. The result of this paper will be apreliminary research for a completed analysis of verandah in hisother projects to clarify transition, evolution and creation ofverandah in Silaban’s residential projects designs. Futhermore,the research will clarify the design method used by Silaban indeveloping verandah as a modern tropical space.
