Charging characteristics of two-component developers for copiers were observed as a function of number of contact between model toners and carrier at both electrically isolated and non-isolated conditions with use of a newly designed apparatus. Observed results were extremely different depending on the measurement condition: Under the electrically isolated condition, charging of model toners was saturated in a short time while under the non-isolated condition, it continued to increase with increasing number of contact with the carriers. The charging level of CCA containing toners was greatly affected by the environmental humidity under the non-isolated condition. Recovery of the charging sites in the carrier was also discussed with the result of thermally stimulated current (TSC) spectra of the carriers. From the result of the TSC, the carrier was found to have charge trapping sites with an energy depth of 1.2 eV.
